Don't kid yourself. Apple is using the same standard RAM that the PC industry uses, and has for YEARS.

There are two other factors that you are not considering. 1) RAM, as with other options, is a HUGE profit center for all PC manufacturers, as well as Apple. Look at Dell's option RAM prices. They are significantly higher than what you can get RAM for at Fry's. This is a well known tactic. They grab the customer with a $499 pricetag, and then milk them on options.

2) Manufacturers like Sun, Apple, HP, IBM, (companies that actually do ENGINEERING, which is not Dell or Gateway) etc are not selling you the same RAM tier as you are going to get from Crucial, Kingston, etc. The RAM manufacturers know that the tier 1 OEMs will pay top dollar for the modules that meet tolerance, and that is where they go. The top tier manufacturers buy it all. There is just not enough of it to go around.

These days, genreally speaking RAM is of pretty high quality, and chances are that you will RARELY run into an issue. However, this does not mean that you will not. It is a cost risk tradoff. These days, the risks are pretty slim.

Be warned, anyone who tells you that RAM is RAM does not have a clue as to what they are talking about.
