The point of memory test software is to test the memory IN THE SYSTEM as a whole. Not just individual modules. Memory can fail on different loads. For example, some modules that work fine when only one bank is is full can fail when more banks are populated, or vice versa. Also, design problems will show up with specific memory tests that will never be identified in an isolated memory test fixture, because they aren't inside the ram, they are in the logic around it on the platform. Same thing goes for PCI bus population, or anything that will put a varying load on the system.

Of course, these aren't the things users should be testing for, they are the problems that Apple and other vendors test for during pre-production and QA testing, contrary to Michelle's claim that OEMs don't use it. They absolutely do, but for different reasons than just qualifying modules in isolation.
