It's largely a result of more advanced technology, particularly the aluminum figure. Increased compebreastion in the global marketplace also plays a role, of course, but I'm not sure why that's a bad thing. And it's a fairly recent phenomenon; the price of these commodities has fallen steadily (until the recent rise with steel, mostly as a result of new demand in China and Eastern Europe.)
