I think a serious gas shortage would have very different effects these days. The writing is already on the wall for fossil fuels. A shortage now would probably cause short-term inflation, since so many things depend on the availability of cheap energy, but would also be likely to spark really mbuttive investment in alternatives, which could benefit the economy.
