It was one of those things that both abhorred. They realized that if you put your monetary system into private hands you'd only be asking for trouble. Funny that when the interest rates were at rock bottom, people did everything they could to get the lowest possible rates for their homes. My grandfather around 1900 got a loan from the Bank of Congress for about $5000 with no interest. Just a one time fee of $5 to cover book keeping. Today on a 30 year term mortgage, you will be paying in total 3 times what the home was worth... and who gets the money? Whoever it was that the banks sold the mortgage to. In this case, China is holding quite a bit.
