We're talking specifically about mismanagement of the currency *supply*, the only thing that backing currency with gold has an effect on. We're not talking about general mismanagement of trade policy or government spending policy which might impact the value of currency. A gold-backed currency would not prevent the government from going into debt either to domestic or foreign lenders, nor would it prevent the US economy from importing more goods than it exports.
