How is this a flaw in the software? How do I move a window from any side on XP? There are advantages to both methods.
There is no maximize function in the default OS X UI. That's a zoom button--it's only supposed to size the window to the most optimum size, but it doesn't work most of the time.

If you're complaining about resizing windows from the corner, I doubt that very seriously. It sounds like you went at this with some preconceptions about what is right and proper from using Windows.
Probably because it was a newer model. Perhaps this was the first dual-core box you've used?
Windows is hardly a 'superior desktop'.
Why not just stick OS X with an 8 gig parbreastion and leave it be, if you dislike it so much?
Why not just buy an external drive? They aren't that much more than an OEM internal drive. You can pick up an external enclosure for $35 or so.
