Oh yes it was. USB ports were very common. In fact Windows 95 got USB support in OSR 2.1 back in 1996. I was building computers back then and most motherboards came with two USB ports.

Like I said. I had a USB mouse in 1996 or 1997. USB was just coming along and the iMac was to benefit from it because as with Apple computers, you weren't supposed to open it up to add a floppy, HD or CD-R-RW. But the fact remains that USB was gaining popularity and that's why Apple added it. They thought Firewire would beat out USB but it didn't. USB 2.0 and reluctance of Firewire developers insured Apple would keep USB.

Credited by those who think Apple was responsible for he USB "revolution". Apple actually adopted USB in 1998. Before that, USB mice and joysticks for PCs were being sold. Apple helped sell the first USB floppy because the dolts at Apple were too stupid to put a removable media on the first iMacs.
