At least if I make an outrageous claim I have something to back it up. This is so unbelievable that I put a question mark on the subject line.

Oh yes it was. USB ports were very common. In fact Windows 95 got USB support in OSR 2.1 back in 1996. I was building computers back then...

If anyone were to ask me if WinXP supported USB 2.0 out of the box, I would say of course. But this page

seems to say different. I found this when looking for info for someone who said when he plugged in his USB 2 hard disk, Windows complained that he'd "plugged in a high-speed device into a low-speed port," and he was certain it had worked earlier without complaint. I have seen that message before, but I always figured it was as it said: he did indeed plug a high-speed device into a low-speed port. He fixed it by futzing around with drivers.

But you know, whether or not my seemingly crazy claim is accurate, one thing is clear: I'm so glad my Wintel is collecting dust.
