That it did. I once sat in Fangio's Alfa 158 'Alfetta.' Beautifully built car, lovely to contemplate. But no roll-bar, no seat belts, no crash helmets, no fire protection for the driver. Brrrrrr. It also burned some exotic fuel mixture which smells terrible and is probably highly toxic to boot. But in its day, nothing could catch it or Fangio. When Ferrari came along and started to beat Alfa it was because the Ferrari burned regular gasoline and got better fuel economy. The Alfas had to stop for their exotic fuel three times to every one time Ascari, in his Ferrari 500 had to stop. It wasn't that the Ferrari was faster or handled better (actually it handled terribly, but that didn't matter at the time), it was that it could stay out longer.
Of course not! There's never malicious intent!
NASCAR does the same thing.
