Thanks. I made another admin account and tried installing the plug-in there. It had no problem. I think this is because I copied over my previous user home folder (before I installed server) and used Netinfo Manager to buttign that as my home folder. Maybe something to do with permissions. Strangely the 'apply to enclosed folders' chackbox in get info is permanently greyed out, when I try to change permissions. That happened even in root!
So I have abandoned it (thinking that if I work-around I will still have the underlying problem, whatever it is) and started migrating things one at a time as I need them into the first account. I know what muahman would say, but this is because I installed os x 10.4 server over a 10.3 client and was unable to just upgrade, as would have been the case had I just installed 10.4 client, which went fine on the other machines.
