painful afternoon with wireless networks and windows boxes... 33HumfHSaKlA~jG9gd

I went over this afternoon to work on a friend's computer network that had been working fine until the last couple of days, when the wireless clients (one Dell desktop with a network PCI adapter and one Dell notebook with intel wireless inside) stopped working, but the wired system next to the router worked fine.

I took over my current router and a spare older one, both with wireless support to test along with the one there in case something had died in it.

I also took along my macbook pro to test a completely different platform. I also took along my Compaq notebook running XP Linux dual boot.

First thing I did was fire up my MBP, turned on the airport, saw the network, put in the WPA pbuttphrase, it got an IP address, and it connected to the web. Same thing with the Compaq.

I then tried the Dell notebook, which had some Dell-provided replacement for the normal wireless network control panel (which claimed it couldnt' run because it had been replaced) and tried the same thing. It would see the signal, it would get a local ip address (192.168.0.5), but would not route to the internet.

I turned off the firewall. Same thing. I turned off virus software, same thing. I rebooted everything, same thing.

So, I tried the Dell desktop, repeated all of the above, same results.

poo, there's no need for him to be jealous. I've been around a long time. Sure I'm an active guy with a large amount of intellectual curiosity, and I've done a...

I tried turning off WPA completely and running it open. MBP still worked, Dell systems wouldn't work. Set it to WEP, same thing. Plugged in both of my routers in place of the one that was there. Same thing yet again. Get a local address, but not route out.

Plug in an ethernet cable to the NIC on either the notebook or the desktop, they work fine. Uninstall the drivers and reinstall them on both, still don't work. During the entire process, the wireless on the macbook pro connected and ran fine. Since I'm going to be heading out shortly for my trip, I punted for now and crimped up some fresh ethernet cables and wired them in directly to the original router direct and turned off the wireless stuff. A damn mystery, the type Windows users seem to feed off of, but not worth the effort.

Both of the wireless systems over there had been working for over 3 years until a few days ago. I'll go back and figure it out when I get back, if they don't before then.
