harddrive problems
Two questions. 1. Whenever I try to boot off of my laptops hard drive, all I get are clicking sounds. After making...

I am not sure if you have determined whether the fault is with your monitor or with your computer.

What you could so is to get you computer to play some music and see if it is still playing when your monitor turns off.

Sounds like your computer is faulty but if it was it probably would not turn the monitor off althought it might.

There are also things like viruses to consider have you ran a virus scan (probably need more than 10 mins to do it though).

Try it in safe mode as suggested, also minimumise the startup programs ( buttume you know how to do this, it may vary depending on your operating system which i buttume is windows XP (u didnt say).

yawnmoth The hard drive is most likely completely dead, I just replaced one in a laptop today with the exact same symptoms. I did of coarse try...

You said you took it back and he said the monitor was OK, but what did he say about the computer, obviously that is not OK!! New PC's are more prone to faults than older ones, problems usually occur very early in the first few months, after that they are usually fine untill they are very old, (10 years or more) buttuming you have not done something stupid like used it in the bath :O)

Is there a setting in "Power Management" to turn OFF ? I am not sure if you have determined whether the fault is with your monitor or with your computer. What you could...

I would try a post to alt.computer.hardware infact I will post it there myself with a copy of your orginal post which I have copied in below.

-------------Original post below-------------

2 months ago i purchased a 'real' computer..i had been using 'webtv' the psuedo computer...ahh..you notice i'm posting from the 'unreal' computer.

everything was working fine til saturday morning. woke up to a 'sleeping' monitor that won't respond to mouse or anything.

had to shut down system and restart to get anything to work...then..pouf..monitor 'goes to sleep' without warning.

i was on the phone with HP for HOURS trying all these different things..redoing setting...restoring to earlier time..all to no avail. took the thing back to BEST BUY where the guy says there's nothing wrong with the monitor after running a check on it

naturally i didn't sign up with geek squad so anything further thru best buy will cost $$..

HP says send it back for repairs...could take weeks. this system is only TWO MONTHS OLD...what could have gone wrong?

any suggestions..

thanks... mary
