BJP seeks action against Patil for 'misleading' Parliament

Indraprasth - Condemning the police action against Honda factory workers in Gurgaon, the BJP said it was planning to seek action against Home Minister Shivraj Patil for ''misleading'' the Parliament by saying the lathicharge was on a procession.

Talking to newspersons, BJP spokesperson Sushma Swaraj said it was clear from television footage that a 1,500- strong police force had ''terrorised'' the 700 workers of Hero Honda on Monday and Tuesday.

Patil, in his statement however, had misled parliament by stating that the police lathicharged a workers' procession. The police had surrounded the workers and beat them up mercilessly, ''reminding of the Jallianwala Bagh incident'', she said.

The BJP wanted all those injured to be given treatment and compensated adequately. The government should come out with the list of missing people and tell the world if they were recuperating in hospital of if they were alive or dead, Swaraj said.

''Our MPs are deeply dissatisfied about Mr Patil's statement and we are considering how to move about it,'' she added. She however welcomed his statement promising a judicial inquiry, saying Haryana Chief Minister had only been talking about magisterial inquiry although the SP and deputy commissioners themselves were shown attacking the workers.

Both these officials have to be suspended if the inquiry has to be objective and meaningful, she said.

Even if the workers turn violent, there are ways of dealing with it without brutal physical beatings. Normally lathicharge is meant to quell agitators, but in this case they were surrounded by the police and ''beaten up like animals'', she said.

Swaraj said the NDA had sent a three-member team consisting of Haryana MP Kishan Singh Sangwan, S S Ahluwalia and Dinesh trivedi of the Trinamool Congress after Monday's ''brutal attack''.

She said the level of ''state terror'' was such that for the first time entire the Opposition and even the parties supporting the government from outside, had joined the walkout showing that the ideological differences had become insignificant when the people saw the brutalities committed on the workers.

She denied reports that leader of opposition L K Advani had stated at the BJP parliamentary party that the boycotting the last parliament session was wrong.

''There was no mention of any such thing.'' The party, she said, was sending a four-member delegation consisting of Ahluwalia, Thawar Singh Gehlot, Kripal Parmar and Laxman Singh to report to the parliamentary party on the blockade of highways in Manipur by some Naga organisations, causing shortage of essential supplies.

The delegation will tour the state on July 28 and 29 and give its report to the party, she said.
