On Wed, 25 May 2005, Day Brown They already have done this, will do more of this, and it will hurt employed Americans who become laid off and then...

"BUT they need all of THAT and so if we are able to put them to work they will be able to buy THAT. "

Be that as it may, what I warned some years ago in a published letter to Electronic...

When we lived in isolation -there was no such thing as private sector-MNC employment. Now that the doors have been opened (in part because of arm-twisting by the IMF), MNCs are moving in to setup shop. They have a supply of manpower as well as demand for goods -which doesn't necessarily depend on how many people they employ. The biggest emloyer in India is the farm sector. IT is something for urban folks and as you noted, the bulk of the population which lives in villages has nothing to do with it.

"Currently, if I understand it right in India (as in many other different countries) one can basically find several parallel economies that do not interact. In other words people from one economy have nothing to suggest to people from another economy and they don't have means to buy anything from another economy. "

Indian economy is a layered economy. It is something that people have devised for their own benefit. A poor villager cannot afford to go to a dept store to buy goods-food. He buys it from a farmers' market -where there is no packaging-storage etc.. and an entire spectrum of society lives on that Its kind of unregulated and not a function of poverty. Meaning there are other poor countries that do not have a layered economy and the fact its unregulated means that price-fixing by corporations is difficult to achieve. Whether they buy from a layer above or below depends on availability. Some of the branded televisions-gadgets have to be got from the city -they aren't availablei inthe village.

"If you are successful in this road it will be a historical achievement for your country. "

If we have 1 economy controlled by the Walmarts and other MNCs -we will be ruined. They do dumping and price-fixing to increase profits and it has had a disastorous effect on some s. american countries. If more people find jobs in the service sector and move out of farm sector, it will be an achievement for the country. I mean, there are more mouths to feed than the land and its shrinking water table can support and its all heavily dependent on the monsoon weather system. So to import food, we need to export something. Industrial manufacturing brings with it pollution -but service sector doesn't do much of that. So we are coincidentally headed in the right direction. (We could have ended up doing industrial production -but red tape prevented that from happening).

"The problem on this shore is that a tendency exists of falling one economy apart into two or more economies which in turn brings about negative social consequences."

On Sun, 29 May 2005, Kamal R. Prasad We were doing just fine right up to the times in the, roughly...

The problem at your end is an unssustainable cost-std of living. 2% of the population is stinking rich and wants an even better std of living -and the other 98% pays for it by being financially unviable to employ. If you can get the message across to the politicians that you need an equivalent cost of living to compete for jobs in a global economy -that can fix some problems.

regards -kamal
