Paris, Mar 20: Cap Gemini, Europe's largest computer-services company, said it opened its third computer- services center in India and set a target for 10,000 employees in the country by the end of 2007.

Paris-based Cap Gemini opened a center in Kolkata with 500 seats, which will initially focus on services including web-based custom software development, the company said in a statement today.

Cap Gemini currently employs more than 4,000 people in India at facilities in Mumbai and Bangalore, up from about 3,500 in November. At the same time, the company has been cutting jobs in its unprofitable U.S. consulting business.

``India's talent and technology strengths have been acknowledged worldwide,'' Chief Executive Officer Paul Hermelin said in the statement. ``The opening of this new center is an important new step for the group, which has now reached critical size in India.''

The company is aiming to employ 6,000 people in India by the end of 2006, the executive said and added that the company would require 14,000 workers in India by the end of 2008.
