It wants to hire the best brains the country can provide, both experienced and fresh. Werner Vogels, CTO at Amazon, who is presently on the job, said he is impressed by the vast pool of engineering talent and impressive set of engineers that India offers. With annual sales upwards of $5 billion, Amazon has an active customer base of 47 million. Amazon's software development centre in Bangalore has been low profile since inception last year. Company executives not willing to break headcount by country, said that the size of the small team in Bangalore was being doubled. Manpower recruiting agencies estimate the headcount at Amazon's Bangalore operations to be less than 100. Like many other brand names in the technology world, Amazon too wants to hire the best engineers in the country, which, considering the present war for talent is an uphill task. With India's reputation as a hotspot for technical talent gaining ground, the number of MNC firms using the country as a software development centre is growing. Bangalore alone has been attracting two new MNC firms every week. Mr Vogels said the Indian centre will work on 'search' and 'web services', two key elements of Amazon. The company has a stringent hiring process, he said. He is confident of getting the right kind of professionals, despite the growing demand for them. What gives him this confidence is Amazon using latest technology for development, offering long-term product ownership, and rewarding innovation and risk takers, he said. Amazon.com has around 7000 plus employees. Outside the US, its development centres are in India and the UK.
