How do you "know" that? It certainly differs from my experience. My cost of medical insurance has more than doubled in that time...

I can see the point you are making very well. Can you see the point I am making? That the veracity of this or any other adjustment is in question simply because only adjustments that yield a favorable outcome (lower inflation numbers) are to be considered. Can you spell "b i a s"?

All of it just proves my point. The goal is obfuscation, not clarity and transparency.

Now you are engaging in obfuscation. We are not talking about avoiding change. We are talking about putting forth numbers that enlighten instead of producing a wall of blather that hides the truth about what is being done with the public trust.

I'm not upset that the CPI-U is not higher than it is. I'm upset because inflation is very high and that the Fed successfully misrepresents itself as an "inflation fighting" enbreasty.

No problem. Asking an expert is a technique I use often when my personal observation seems to contradict conventional...

Indeed, I have income that is indexed to inflation. My complaint is that not only does the CPI fail to measure this accurately, but is in fact reporting it fraudulently. Forget measurement difficulties. The innacuracies are not random but consistently biased to understate the rate of inflation. Consumer prices, as a whole, are rising much faster than the the CPI would indicate.

Yes. Most of my income is in the form of US dollars.

Here is what I feel.

I believe the mission of the Fed is to inflate the dollar as hard and fast as it possibly can consistent with avoiding economic collapse and civil unrest. I believe that we are entering a period of phenominally high government spending creating immense pressure to confiscate an ever increasing percentage of the real gross domestic output. I believe they are using inflation to accomplish this as an (arguably!) more palatable alternative to direct taxation. And the not so independent Fed is now willing to take increasing risk to accomplish the goal.

By understating inflation, the government gets to take a negative (inflation) and put it forth fraudulently as a positive (economic growth). Tricky business this - to maximize inflation without shaking confidence in the US dollar. To this end, numbers are deliberatedly engineered to hide the full magnitude.

Okay, that is what I "feel". Now here is what I know.

Prices (food, shelter, medicine, transportation), on average, have doubled over the past 6 years. And at this moment in time, the pace of inflation is accelerating.

The CPI is worthless to consumers as a measure of the purchising power of the dollar. Thomas Bartkus

PS - Inflation has a wonderful effect (big +) on direct income tax revenues also. All in all, a very effective means of capturing an ever increasing share of the private economy. A definite win-win for big (and growing!) government IF it succeeds in avoiding that civil unrest - economic collapse thingy.
