How do you "know" that? It certainly differs from my experience. My cost of medical insurance has more than doubled in that time. The next highest increase for me has been gasoline, and the average national pump price has almost doubled in that time (from $1.14 for regular on 5-10-99 to $2.18 on 5-9-05). Food certainly doesn't seem to have doubled. Just looking at one random example, according to the meat producers council, choice beef ribeye went from $7.02-lb in Jan-01 to $7.90-lb in Feb-05. Do you have any examples of food prices that have escalated that much? The places to which I fly cost about the same or slightly more than 6 years ago (but the food really sucks--maybe that's where your proposed negative adjustment should come into play). My housing costs have gone down, since reduced interest costs more than offset increased taxes, and the costs of renters I know has increase much less than double. Your "knowledge" of this "fact" is even more amazing than your knowledge of doubled prices over the last 6 years. With knowledge such as this, you should have absolutely no financial worries. If you don't know how to do it yourself, take this knowledge to someone familiar with commodity futures and you will be set for life.
