You can't take Hollywood portrayal of American life to be the truth, it's far, far from the truth. The reality is that women are slightly mistrusted in American industry because many of them do still drop the career to have families. (I'm not saying they shouldn't, just that it does disrupt the business a bit so upper management are leery of them.) And when a woman does "take a break" from her career to have a family, when she decides to come back to work after a year or longer, she's almost certainly looking at starting at entry level again. (Unless she has connections, of course.) People in other countries who watch American TV need to understand that Hollywood likes to glorify and pretty things up. Just like how most of the actors are gorgeous. Compare most of American actors to most of British tv actors, for example. Another good example is the tv show "Married with Children".
