Firefighters get upper hand on mountain fires By Doug Keeler Midway Driller Editor Published: Friday, July 28, 2006 Firefighters have finally contained a stubborn brush fire burning in the mountains south of Taft, and are coming close to getting control of another fire to the east that threatened Frazier Park for a time earlier this week. The Ridge Fire that burned in a remote area of the San Emidio Mountains about seven miles northwest of Camp Condor is 100 percent contained, firefighters said Thursday morning. That fire started Saturday evening when a lightning strike ignited brush and trees on the Blue Ridge of the San Emidio Mountains just north of Cerro Noroeste road above Santiaga Canyon. The Ridge fire burned 2,418 acres before firefighters finally contained it late Wednesday. Flames from that fire were visible from Taft for several nights. The Ridge fire was in a remote area and firefighters had to drive in south off Highway 166 and wind their way up steep canyon roads to get access. The Scott Fire, which started Sunday afternoon on the Tecuya Ridge just north of Frazier Park, was expected to be fully contained by Friday evening, firefighters said. Another fire, west of New Cuyama in the San Rafael Wilderness, burned 4500 acres by Thursday morning and is proving much more difficult for firefighters to fight. It is also located in a remote area, and some firefighters are rappelling into the fire from helicopters. About two dozen fires were started in the mountains of Kern and Santa Barbara Counties by lightning strikes over the past week. . . --
