India, China poised to feast on US IT complacency 126 By Ashlee Vance in San Francisco Published Tuesday 26th April 2005 16:38 GMT The technology lead prized by the US, Europe and Japan could come back to... My new boss asked me to write a proposal of research project to get an MSc student to do it. (I would be the advisor.) I suggested an experimental method... and mentioned a possibility of computer modelling (I knew that the lab does not have much of experimental equipment). My boss gladly submitted this proposal, and told me that the student will likely be doing modelling. The thing is that the boss did computer modelling all his previous life. It is natural for him to solve everything by computer modelling. He cannot do anything else. At the same time, his new position requires a balance of experimental and modelling work. Experiment should verify the computer model. What I also do not like in this situation that the future student will be misled as regarding the nature of the project... and this will be I who will be made responsible. Our organisation advertised a position -- the person would be hired at either lower or higher level. The job duties for both positions were identical, except one point. In this point, the lower position would required to build electronics. In the same point, the higher position required the management skill. I wanted to do hands-on work, that is building electronics etc. However, according to the number of years of work experience after PhD, I should be applying for the position of a higher level which was my level. Here is the demonstration that as person progresses up the career ladder, he moves away from benchwork and into management. I cann't believe it -- I have not done anything in science yet, and I am already too old to do benchwork ?? I was shacken by this realisation. Recently, instead of making our product work, I let the engineer do it... instead, I went to blabber about how good features this product had and.
