BANGALORE, July 1: Lamenting on the missed opportunities for India to emerge rich and wealthy, Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram today butterted that the country was on the right track of becoming a knowledge power in the world.

Inaugurating a semi-conductor testing facility of tessolve at the electronics city here, Mr Chidambaram said companies fled India in view of the regulated conditions and allowed other countries to emerge rich and wealthier.

He made a specific reference to semi-conductor fabs that had sprung up in China and Taiwan. He said India should have "no shame in conceding that we are starting in this regard rather late. China and Taiwan are in the business for many years and we have to follow them".

Mr Chidambaram referring to a Korean company setting up a fab centre in Hyderabad recently expressed the fond hope India would emerge a "fab and chip hub" soon. He said "the Government is closely and carefully examining various options and is looking at potential investors to set up fabs in India".

Stating that the real wealth of the future would be the knowledge industry, Mr Chidambaram said that the country had the requisite climiate to become a knowledge power.

Mr Chidambaram said that the real challenge before the country was to bring back foreign investments. In this connection, he referred to his visit to the US eight years ago along with the then Prime Minister I K Gujral and said President Bill Clinton had told them that half the Silicon Valley was in India. "I told him that the country will get the other half very soon" he added.

Stating that the Governmentâs role was only to provide an enabling environment to bring foreign investments, Mr Chidambaram said it was for people, especially in the business and industry sector to work for the country.

Infrastructure such as power and roads shall be the domain of the Government he said adding "our Government in Karnataka led by Dharam Singh is tackling the issue effectively. Recalling the efforts of former Chief Minsiter S M Krishna also he expressed the hope that the international airport would become a reality soon in Bangalore and so also the metro rail. (UNI)
