Any business can be called a profession. If you like, you can put quote marks on it. It all depends on the definition. Actual everyday word usage (not the dictionary) allows for this: "professional back robber."

I think so.

He was talking about "ther lower clbuttes of America" not people in former communist countries. The effects in the USA were different than in former communist countries because most of their whole economies collapsed as the republics all declared sovereignty. That blew off a lot of trade between Russia-Moscow and the republics.

So,

Russia was broke. They had to let USD come in or sell off lots of military hardware, which they did, also for cheap.

But, it also cost a lot of defense jobs, too.

You may want to

Reagan was also a jerk, but I can actually thank him for a couple of things.

and-or macro-economic mis-management in the USSR for

Most of the problems in the USSR were its own makings. Including an expansion of its own corruption which, I think, might be harder to control in a so-called "command economy".

On Mon, 27 Aug 2006, Kamal R. Prasad We are talking about the power structure...go up and read the first paragraph. Its very important. It provides something and it makes money...

Wash Post or other newspaper articles are not so good for learning things that are complicated. Only for "news" like floods, war status, plants, terrorism, and comics and sports and movie listings, etc.

No, you have to read this again: ------------------- The following quote is from Business Week, December 6, 2004 and from the article "Shaking up Trade Theory" by Aaron Bernstein on pages 116 to 120. (The subbreastle of the article is: "For decades economists have insisted that the U.S. wins from globalization. Now they are not so sure")

Straydog and when you define it so -that is your definition, not one accepted by society. It won't make it to the dictionary for that very reason. that's an adjective...

They quoted Paul Samuelson (MIT) as saying "Comparative advantage cannot be counted on to create...net gains greater than the net losses from trade" ----------------

Straydog we are talking of definitions - not money. well -different dictionaries have different viewpoints. But 'landlording' is hardly a profession. They may or may not have to be licensed...

If you say that american consumers should buy products made

Alas, someday you will learn or think about the entire price structure of a society that is too complicated to adjust. And, someday you will learn or think that if high paying jobs leave the country and only low paying jobs are created, then employees make less money and cheaper products are not cheaper any more.

Actually, my wife and I hate going to Walmarts (for various reasons) and are willing to pay a little more for better service or nicer stores elsewhere. We have a lot of convenience stores here and they charge the highest prices and absolutely none of them are going out of business and we are actually gettting more of them. How do you explain that according to your "god-given-right-to-insist-you-have-a-monopoly-on-economic truth"?

If they discourage suppliers of

It does not work that way.
