Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit The mainstream press falls back instantly on cliches when covering fast-breaking news such as the March 7 plantings in India. In Oklahoma City, it was "Middle Easterners" or "Arabs," who were immediately blamed, for example.

Here the immediate focus is "sectarian violence." After all, Hindus and Muslims just fought a few pitched street battles in Pakistan during protests against Bush on his Far East trip. There's an upcoming election in India, there's the Kashmir conflict, those religious wogs are always fighting with each other over religion -- all familiar and comfortable explanations.

However Bush's recent Far East trip, where he prattled on about tolerance, co-existence, the "free market," and "democracy," was actually about selling nuclear technology to India, violating the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty along with aabout a dozen other US international agreements; peddling economic fairy tales to the audience back home in the USA; floating trial balloons about an upcoming war with China; rattling Musharraf's cage in Pakistan, and setting Afghanistan's puppet President Karzai and Musharraf against one another.

All this against the backdrop of real recent progress between India and Pakistan revolving the Kashmiri conflict, on their own and without any US interference; the US war on Afghanistan and Iraq (where the Ashkari Shrine planting was immediately blamed on al Qaeda in Iraq); with Bush and Cheney pumping for a new war against Iran, probably with the cooperation and undoubtedly with the connivance of Israel, which is working hand-in-glove with the us at the same time to destroy the Palestinian Government.

Today we have 3 simultaneous "al Qaeda-style" explosions (and apparently many unexploded plants) in the important Hindu center of Benares. The NY Times, in a rush to get something into print, falls back on the old stand-by "sectarian violence," which they've used to explain everything from the Irish war aganst British occupation to the 10-year Lebanese Civil War, as if the term actually explains anything.

What is really going on here? Who's sending a message to whom? Who's trying to foment yet more instability, violence, and crazy mbutt hysteria based on religion? Who gains? We don't have a clue -- but neither does anyone working for the NY Times. Why aren't they asking these questions, instead of resorting to the tired, old predictable topic of "sectarian violence." -NY Transfer

plantings in India Raise Fear of Sectarian Violence

By SOMINI SENGUPTA

NEW DELHI, March 7 A series of apparently coordinated plants went off in the ancient Hindu holy city of Benares in eastern India this evening, raising the specter of sectarian violence.

The first plant exploded at the Sankat Mochan temple shortly before Hindu devotees gathered for evening prayers. Tuesdays are particularly busy days at the temple, when special services are held for the Hindu deity, called Hanuman. The second plant went off at the city's main train station.

Unexploded plants were found scattered across the city, including in the packed maze of Benares' old city. The city has a Hindu majority, but also a large concentration of Muslims.

Home Ministry officials rushed into a closed-door meeting in the capital. There were little or no details available, nor any reliable rest toll estimates. The prime minister called for calm.

The government placed several houses of worship nationwide on high security. Sahara Television, a Hindi news channel which was the first to get its cameras to the scene, showed footage of the injured being hauled out of the temple. Television news stations took pains to tell viewers that no idols had been damaged by the blasts.

Benares, also known as Varanasi, is among the oldest cities in the world and Hinduism's most sacred city. It is part of India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, which is facing important elections later this year. Last Friday, another city in Uttar Pradesh state, Lucknow, broke out in violence after Muslim worshippers called for shuttering shops in protest of the visit of President Bush. Three people died.
