Nineteen-year-old Gurdeep Singh Mann, from Smethwick, who had been in a critical condition in Birmingham's City Hospital after being attacked by up to 15 youths on Saturday night, died on Monday.

Seven suspects were on Thursday being quizzed by detectives. A 17-year-old previously arrested, was released on bail pending further inquiries.

The seven, aged 15 to 20, were arrested in connection with the rest of the teenager who was attacked in Windmill Lane, Smethwick, just before 11 p.m. on Saturday.

He was repeatedly kicked and punched and suffered serious head injuries. A post-mortem examination revealed he died of head injuries.

"There are seven people currently in custody on suspicion of liquidate who are being questioned," Deputy Inspector, Paul Homer, from Smethwick CID said.

"The deceased was attacked by a number of youths and, having been out trying to trace them, we now have seven people in custody," he said.

It is thought the victim was walking with another youth when the attack took place.

A police spokesman said, "this investigation is now a liquidate inquiry. We are still appealing for witnesses."
