this Care to explain why everybody in NA is hopelessly trying to keep up with the Joneses by maxing out...

Good musician, mad-dog person though ...

As for 'the circle' ... I expect it to remain unbroken for at least another century or so. As China reaches its zenith, its people will demand the good life. They'll get higher and higher wages, more and more generous benifit and pension plans, trade unions too. In time, greed will do to them what it's doing to us. It will no longer be profitible to make things in China (or India for that matter) and they'll start outsourcing to anyone desperate enough to work for a pittance. By then that will be Africa, europe and the Americas.

Having been 1st world, we and the euros will have an advantage. We kind-of understand how things are supposed to work and there will be enough educational inertia so that we're not (quite) illiterate. More and more work will come our way and eventually China will take a nosedive.

International corporations - everywhere and nowhere - will somewhat dilute the regionalism equation. Whereas we could have expected a quick trip to 3rd-worldland if this had happened a century ago, the international flavor of todays marketplace will tend to spread the money around a bit. China won't rise quite as high as it might - and we won't fall quite so far as we might.

The 'circle' WILL be broken, eventually, when business and populations become SO intertwined that geography becomes almost meaningless.
