Outsourcing is how the playing field is being leveled. It wasn't too bad when the commodities were physical goods because it took time to set up a factory and train employees and the goods had to move long distances. Now that the goods and services are high tech it's easy to set up a factory--it just installing a computer--and the goods move long distances quickly. There's still the problem of finding trained employees but we have a huge well of untapped human resources since we are just at the beginning of globalization and automation.

Look, I don't like seeing the egalitarian strides made in the USA over the last hundred years being lost. I'd prefer a system of tarriffs that would help protect the best of our social structure while providing for the improvments in the third world nations to allow the tarriffs to be removed. It's unfortunate that tarriffs are used to maintian the elite power structures in the various nations rather than to tear them down. It shouldn't be about keeping politicians in power or employees in particular jobs but about maintaining or improving personal empowerment.
