Yep. Here in "inexpensive" southern Delaware, the oil burner guy gets $80-hr to do a PM on the oil burner before season and he works out of his own house. The electrician who works out of his own house gets $50-60-hour. The kitchen installation guy gets $50 for showing up at your front door, and $50-hour thereafter. And, I had a guy work on my leaking skylights back at my old house. Two guys show up, working out of their own houses, and wanted $1000 for less than 8 hours work (can you do the arithmetic on that to calculate per hour gross pay?). And, me, telling kids on science.research.careers that want to get a PhD that they are barking up the wrong tree and they don't like that message. I'm 61 and have a PhD but no PhD-requiring job. And, you can't explain to the kids how age discrimination works...you get blank faces, dumb looks, and silence when you do.
