I don't know if you know this, but Fusion may be literally just around the corner in terms of useful success. Recently, an interesting compound was noted to be producing actual fusion, with traceable generation of helium and neutrons, apparently by acting as a sort of particle accelerator of very efficient and high houtput, though only on a microscopic scale. Interestingly, this wasn't some immensely expensive tokomak type of containment; the compound in question simply has to be refrigerated for a while and then allowed to warm to room temperature. It's noted that this was in no way producing a surplus of energy. Rather, it was far below break-even. However, we do now have a reliable mechanism for inducing fusion at standard temperature and pressure. Finding a way to make that containable and self-sustaining for long enough to get out more energy than was put into it, that will be the trick... but that might be just engineering, not requiring any new discoveries.

This is exactly what I was talking about.

I'm not saying he's right, I'm just saying he might not be as wrong as you think he was. Again, I don't think he's properly attributing motive, but what's happening is what's happening, whatever the reason "why".
