BTW: I thot we have the term "alpha male" from *primate* research. They found out its handed down on the Y chromosome. Alphas have higher adrenalin (speeds reflexes, but causes impulsivity) and lower seratonin (sharpens senses, but make for restless sleep).

The alphas commit all the violence, mostly trying to control access to ****s. Which is why the ****s sneak off into the bush to mate with betas. The alphas however are the ones on the line defending the turf from other bands of alphas.

But, it turns out, the competent mothers are the daughters of betas. The daughters of alphas neglect, abuse, and abandon young. The betas, both male and female, adopt orphans.

If there are too many alphas. the group breaks into civil war, loosers flee into marginal territory. If too many betas, then there's not enough to defend the turf. But if too few, then the survival rate of the young is not high enough to maintain the number of fit alphas to defend them.

Betas are the same size as Alphas, routinely place themselves between an alpha and the more vulnerable. They can take the abuse. The alphas prefer a beta target, but if no beta is available, why then the wife and kids will do.

Female intuition is an evolutionary trait to read the body language of alphas, and therefore know, before the alpha does, that he will strike out. "Dont bother your father; you know he's grouchy in the morning."

Along with intuition comes empathy. which is the last thing an alpha wants or needs on the line of battle. So, alphas dont understand themselves, but seek women to do that for them.

Since it is a genetic trait, some gene pools have more alphas than others. Thus, you'd expect hunting tribes to have more alphas and therefore have more violence. Which they do. Steven Pinker, The Blank Slate, reports that the graveyards of tropical hunting tribes have skeletons that show *20 times* the rate of violent trauma as that seen in the graveyards of yeoman farmers. LeBlanc, in 'Constant Battles' takes on the myth of the "Noble Savage" and reports the same thing.
