Hell has British food, an American cop, a French car, a Japanese house... and the human genome data is beginning to let us sort out some of the reasons why this is so. Likewise, there are genetic endowments that permitted a culture to establish the well ordered phalanx and use it so effectively- while other gene pools, over the course of thousands of years, were never able to employ the system.
In every case, where there is a population of yeoman farmers to draw on, you can find the men with the self control to make a phalanx. Archaeology shows how there is a pioneer period when the yeomen move in, clear the land, and pbutt that land onto sons. But since they have too many sons, less fertile land always gets developed, which plays out after a few years. And whenever there's a crop failure, land goes on the market to be bought up by the aristocracy, which then has the land worked with serfs and slaves.
In Greece, when this happened, the Yeomen moved to Italy. But then when it happened in Italy, they moved to Switzerland & Germany. There was so much forested land to convert, they never got it all done, but when the Junker family manipulated the grain market, as Crbuttus had done in Italy, the Yeomen farmers moved on... to America. And now, about 1% of the population is still on family farms. Robert Kaplan, Imperial Grunts, reports that such farm boys make up *HALF* of the Green Berets.
You'd think the Pentagon would notice where its most competent military personnel come from and look into all this.
