The gain in living standards was due to women entering the work force, immitating the Soviet Union where women worked and children were raised in state-run day care centers and indoctrinated in Soviet propaganda. With two incomes per household, the standard of living rose until the capitalists inflated prices to adjust for the increased incomes of young two-income families. Then it became "necessary" for both parents to work and spawned the day care industry -- like the Soviets had created under communism.

The same arguments were used to maintain slavery in the South. The aristocracy in Dixie believed that without African slaves, the cotton and tobacco industries would collapse. The same claims were used to argue that without the Chinese, we couldn't have built the railroads in North America and in the Panama Canal Zone. Of course, once the railroads were completed, the Chinese were sent packing. The cotton gin made slavery irrelevant. Life went on. Life will go on if millions of illegal aliens are sent back to Brazil, Mexico, China, Africa, the Middle East, and Haiti.

As Bob Dylan said in "The Times Are A' Changing": "The loser now will later be win (sic) . . . .". Americans are fighters, unlike Mexicans. They unionized and fought against the abuses of the mining industry and other industries. They ended slavery, child labor, the exploitation of women and other human rights violations. Likewise, they will end the indentured servitude of Chinese and Latin American workers who are brought here as slaves and will put an end to the practice of global corporations racing to the bottom with regard to wages, environmental regulations, and worker rights. Heck, corporations that set up shop in the Maquiladores don't want to pay Mexican wages and have moved to China where citizens recently rioted for days to protest the horrible environmental degradation and pollution caused by "foreign" factories.

Free trade has been a one-way benefit for foreign workers. Our government does not know how to negotiate free trade agreements so that American workers and factories are protected. Now they want to destroy our agricultural industry in the same way they have destroyed electronics and manufacturing in this country. Free trade has cost 3 million jobs since Bush was put in the White House by the Supreme Court. I don't blame foreigners, but I do blame the Republicans and Democrats. CAFTA and the FTAA should be put on hold until we can stop the bleeding in terms of our trade deficits with China, Japan, Europe, India, Malaysia, and the rest of the world.
