The sad fact is..that when Boeing and the other big aerospace companies downsized..a poo load of machinists had to go look for work.
A guy would come into a small job shop and apply. He had spent 25 yrs running the same mill, doing the same type of parts. He had probably commanded top wages. While he made them beautifully and quickly...he was totally lost when it came to doing anything else. Not somebody a job shop wanted to hire, as their work is varied and diversified. If they had room, they might hire him at 1-3rd of his old wages, because he had to learn machining.
Service techs are always in demand. Every industry needs em...and most skills transfer across industry lines pretty well. Welding on a beer keg is mostly the same as welding on a IC chip slitter. Wiring up a motor on a milling machine is pretty much the same as wiring up a motor on a ice cream mixer.
