I'm a life-long Californian, born and raised. I can understand the buttumption someone might make, that because I'm an activist on the Illegals issue, I would only see things through tinted glbuttes. But I do possess a fair ability to see things as they are, and as others see them, that's not a difficult trick for me. There is always that silliness some people have, that if you just "understand them better", you'll be more inclined to accept them and what they do. Clinton had an hilarious lib-take on that once.

What I see in my town is that natives avoid patronising places staffed with Illegals, most especially when they are out front. We have a few fast-food joints with no Illegals, not a single one. We have McDees that appear to be staffed fully by Illegals. There are no apparent Illegals fronting our liquor stores and quicky-marts. We have some Indians (East), a few Lebanese and Chinese and regular Anglos doing that. When you're out & about regularly, you just notice what people do, who the patrons are and where they patronize.

You get a very stark view on this by going up to our big hotels. Virtually none of the face-to-face staff, the people who take care of the tourist who walks in, are hispanic (and presumably Illegal). You have lots of young foriegners doing those front jobs however: Australians, Poles, Taiwanese, Filipino, etc. You won't see a single Illegal from the south, cause customers do not wish to be glad-handed by people whose presence here they take issue with. They are all in the back. That's what I've seen in my own stints working up there.

If you see it for yourself, it disposes of the racism issue, as foriegners with interesting accents are actually preferred for those customer jobs in hotels. It's about Illegals from latin-america, and no one else.
