I disagree. The processors, languages, APIs, and file formats are the building blocks for my work, but they do not determine what I do. What I use them for is up to me and my client-employer. I consider myself an engineer, providing improvements in the way things are done and possibly enabling new things to be done. The fact that I work on embedded systems probably helps, since I'm connecting to devices that aren't traditional computer peripherals.

If you want to do research, such as cryptology or DNA clbuttification, you can (with the proper background). If you want to invent better ways to employ computers, you can. In most cases you need to either do it without steady payment or convince a research organization to fund you. If your regular job is mind numbing, maybe you should get a outside outlet, programming or not, to satisfy your needs for creativity and pride. A better solution, of course, would be to find work that is more satisfying.

I do some work for a company that has become a mainstay in their industry. Some products seem to have stabilized without significant changes in function, price, etc. Yet, I seek to find the challenges to add value within this environment. Diversity and cross-training helps. So do work environments that support a little individual exploration. There is a often a balance needed to satisfying your client-employer and yourself. Don't neglect either side.
