My understanding is that according to current Canadian copyright laws, we're allowed to make copies of music for personal use. They don't specify where the music can come from, and it doesn't apply to non-musical works (like movies, software, etc). So we should be able to borrow a CD from the local library, and burn a copy of it, as well as downloading from the P2P networks, etc. What may not be legal is uploading the music. It's very confusing...

Theoretically, there's a levy on all blank media (CD's, memory for MP3 players, etc), and that levy gets distributed to the artists to compensate them. Also theoretically, it's a violation of the copyright law if I make a copy of a CD for my wife; she'd have to make her own.

you're curious. More information here: that in Canada, it's not illegal to make a copy of any musical works you can get. I don't know if it's illegal to share the music, though. And again, this only applies to musical works; that's very specific. Anything else like software, movies, etc would be illegal. Hmmm, wonder how that applies to musicals? :)
