Dell laptop freezing 80Hi All Create OS Recovery CD Terry, 1. You can do the following, if you have not wiped your HDD from at = least one of your Dim2400's if they... Hopefully someone has some knowledge of this: Dell Inspiron 1500 laptop the machine started to suddenly freeze as different points. Almost everything pointed to overheating but all diagnostics checks pbutted With an extended warrenty - dell was called and 72 hours later (on a within 24 hour on site warrenty) a tech came out - ran the same diagnostics - everything pbutted - and left saying that it was a software problem. The machine is protected by a network firewall -- was running zone alarm - had spybot search and destroy, adaware se and pest patrol used weekly as well as a virus blocker. After the tech left - diagnostics programs were run again - all clean - the start-up and services under msconfig were carefully scrutinized and any unneccesary items shut off - to no effect on the problem. The machine seemed to run okay in safe mode and all manipulation was done in safemode. But the machine still would freeze at different points. Sometimes it would freeze while loading drivers. Sometimes it would freeze at the pbuttword screen. Sometimes in the middle of entering a pbuttword and sometimes after everything loaded, pbuttword accepted and then trying to run a program. Also - after shutting down (by holding in the on-off button -- NOTHING would work after a freeze) sometimes (about 2 out of 5 times) the machine wouldn't even get to the BIOS but would freeze on turn-on with a blinking cursor in the upper left. IF we unplugged from the AC adapter, it would then boot from the battery. (there are two machines - bought 1 month apart - battery and ac adapter were tried from the good machine with no difference. Finally - we decided it must be a virus or something and decided to reload windows. A full format of the C drive was done (parbreastion 2 - there is a very small parbreastion 1 that probably holds some proprietary Dell software) - the rescue disk was used and everything seemed to go smoothly. But upon completion - we still had the exact same problems. Ran the Dell resourses disk and it said that drivers were loaded and functioning Again we ran the diagnostics programs - although now it was starting to freeze in safe mode also. At one point - in full windows mode, not safe mode - I actually was able to get to the device manager and found quite a few devices with yellow question marks: Base system Device Ethernet Controller Multimedia audio controller network controller PCI modem Video Controller Video Controller VGA Celeron M question all we've read is that the computers have to have their own AV program = on there, a firewall, they haven't been specific... Was going to try and reload those drivers but as soon as I right-clicked - the machine froze again. I'm probably leaving a few steps out and I'd say we tried everything but if we did - then we would probably know what was wrong. It still sure seems like this is a hardware problem I'm not sure what to try next. Anyone have any experience or thoughts with this? Thanx!!
