Dell have been changing the way they handle OS CD's.

It used to be that you always got a Windows CD with a new system.

Then some time ago they changed their policy, and started putting an image of it on the HD in a hidden parbreastion. If the system came with some sort of burner (CD or DVD), then there was a 1-time option to burn a copy from that image to a CD. You could only do that one time.

I understand that many people either didn't like that, or they got a system with no burner, so they would call customer service, and customer service then shipped a Windows CD to them.

Then, after too many people complaining about that, they then started offering the option when you buy the system to get a Windows CD for $10. That's the way it normally is today.

Not knowing just how old your system is, depends on which method was available when you bought your system.

FWIW, I just bought a E510 a month ago. I did purchase for $10, a copy of the Windows CD.

Later, I discovered that although the system was shipped with the Windows CD I asked for as well as a Driver CD and a WordPerfect CD, there was no CD for the misc applications Dell installs. such as the burnerer software, etc...

I went on-line to Dell, went to thier support page and looked through the menus for the option for 'missing' items. Filling out that form then asked me If I would like to chat live with a Dell rep.

That's what I chose to do, and it a min I was chatting with someone with an Indian-type name. He was extremely helpfull and after he took my order number and asked a few questions, he readily agreed to send me the missing CD. He then gave me an incident number, and an order number and said he would ship it out. Keep in mind, I told him I got all the CD's expected including the Windows CD I paid $10.00 for.

All of this took place last Wednesday afternoon before Thanksgiving.

By the time I got to work Monday morning, the package was already waiting for me. It had been delivered the previous Friday. Ordered Wednesday the day before Thanksgiving in the late afternoon, and was delivered that Friday. Not bad.

Opening the package, I found not only the apps CD I asked for, but also another Windows CD.

Just contact customer service. I'll bet they'll send one right out....
