A Happy Dell Service Report
Just to provide a modicum of balance to the negative reports about Dell service, here's what...

Pat,

I'm not going to be much help here, but here goes.

In the case of one machine, it had been infected with trojans and spyware. I tried every repair (including a WinXP repair) and re-installation of the HP software I could imagine. I removed most everything (apps) that I could with no success. I stood on my head to no avail. There was important data involved and time constraints. I yellowed out and simply added a new hard disk as the boot drive with a fresh OS install, leaving the old hard disk as a slave to drop and drag. The printer immediately installed and functioned perfectly.

The second case was my Dim8300. I have both an HP deskjet 5150 and a scanjet 3670. For no reason, I lost the ability to compile photos into an "album" format within the HP software from the hard drive. Generating some 20-30 photos into such an album is fairly CPU intensive. Out of the blue, I began getting corruption errors pointing to the HP software itself. I re-evaluated any changes I had made recently to the machine, I un and re-installed various versions of the software countless times (cleaning the registry between each). No joy.

Thank you for offering to look at this. As I posted a version of this before, I shall explain...

Bloodied and battered, I had all but given up.

I then recalled one change I had made since I used the album compiler last and tried it. It fixed it.

What was it? I had turned off drive indexing. When I re-enabled indexing, the problem went away.

Completely stupid and without any apparent connection. I still can't explain why indexing would affect that function, or why it "fixed" the problem.

No help to you, I'm sure, but there it is.

Stew
