Dimension 8100 issuesWell, at least one company (now bought out by another) was hot to trot for ZIPs. A bunch of Precision 330s and 340s bought in the same lot were all equipped with ZIP 100 drives, too. But, yes. Not standard. And perhaps for all of us, a technology that is quickly falling by the wayside, due to costs, speed, and reliability. Remember the click of rest? It is ironic that Iomega ZIPs pretty much end of SyQuest's removable disk technology which was faster, more reliable, but really clunky. Now Iomega has had to move on from ZIPs due to the availability of cheap hard drives and penny CD-R media for backup. I'm basically looking for an easily transportable unit that I can use away from home for e-mail... I think I may have had something to do with the dissolution when I was asked in the early days of cNet to do a comparative review of Sysquest vs. ZIP drives by an old friend who had taken an editorial job there. I liked the ZIPs because they were floppy-sized and could fit in your pocket, and drives themselves were quiet. Some Syquest media were about 5" in diameter and the smaller ones were maybe a fat 4" in diameter, not good for pockets, and costing a small fortune. Syquest drives made awful clanking and whirring noises when media were inserted and ejected. I never tested or used the ZIPs long enough to experience the click of rest, and cNet published my review...
