Is this even worth $75 1245
it may be worth $75 but not any more. most business have to pay to discard equipment, and that is just for the fee that office building charge for...

you can't change the type of system with a bios update. other than the case and removable drives and battery, they are very different machines. the flash utility will not permit you to flash the wrong bios for the motherboard (unless you go out of your way to circumvent this protection).

inspiron 4000: intel bx chipset, ati mobility ms graphics, sold with piii 600-850mhz, upgradeable to 1ghz if it has the newer motherboard (part 01d197), maximum ram of 512mb (2 x 256mb pc100 sodimm), ti1225 cardbus, upga processor socket

inspiron 4100: intel 82830mp chipset, ati mobility radeon m6 16mb or geforce2 go32mb, sold with piii 866-1200mhz, maximum ram of 1024mb (2 x 512mb pc133 sodimm), ti1425 cardbus, 478pin processor socket

could be that the system board was replaced in your system or that the button panel was replaced with the wrong type (one that says 4100 instead of 4000). enter the bios and look for the service tag number listed there and see if it matches the service tag number on the bottom of the machine. if it matches then the machine probably had a screen repair and the wrong button panel was installed after the repair. if it doesn't match then you know you have a frakenstien. but remember frankenstien was a good fellow, just made from evil parts. if your buyer misrepresented it deliberately then you have reason to be mad (depending on price paid) and will probably get nowhere with them, if he-she represented it unknowingly then they may well work with you on finding a solution. let us know how it works out.
