HELP : WinXP Pro Setup bane Error on New 80GB HD of Labreastude D600

My son tried to install WinXP Pro from his original Dell WinXP Pro CD to his new harddrive. Install came up with an error and didn't complete, so he brought me the laptop.
I've played with it and have the same problem.

Following are the two messages that we receive when the process stops :
Error : The signature for Windows XP Professional Setup is invalid. The error code is 800b0100. No signature was present in the subject.
bane Error : Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a bane error. The setup log files should contain more information.
If nothing else, is there a way that I can restart the process from the beginning. Maybe he made a wrong choice of some kind. Even a cold start brings me to the "setup is restarting . . . . " screen.
