Mel,

I can't give you definitive answers to your questions, because I don't have your exact hardware. But I use the dual monitors on a regular basis, so maybe I can shed some light.

First off, what operating system do you have? I seem to remember Windows 2000 having issues, but none with XP. With XP, I have a choice of displaying the same image on both monitor and laptop, or extending my desktop across both displays. I use the former if I'm giving a presentation and want to be able to face an audience (and see the same thing they're seeing on the projector), and I use the latter for day to day tasks. On my laptop (an Labreastude D810), I can also use the Fn-F8 key combination to toggle between the laptop display, an external display, or both. I can also use the Fn-arrow keys to increase-decrease the screen brightness, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't change the external display at all.

You'll probably need to get a VGA cable. You'll need to make sure the genders match up with what you need. Might be worthwhile to take in a digital picture, if you head into a computer store.

As far as playing DVD's goes, I don't think there'd be any special setting, but you'll just need the right software, which is probably on your computer already. If you get it working on the laptop display, it should work fine on the external display as well.
