I seem to remember Windows 2000 having issues, but none with XP. With XP, I have a choice of displaying the same image on both monitor and laptop, or extending my desktop across both displays. I use the former if I'm giving a presentation and want to be able to face an audience (and see the same thing they're seeing on the projector), and I use the latter for day to day tasks. On my laptop (an Labreastude D810), I can also use the Fn-F8 key combination to toggle between the laptop display, an external display, or both. I can also use the Fn-arrow keys to increase-decrease the screen brightness, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't change the external display at all. You'll probably need to get a VGA cable. You'll need to make sure the genders match up with what you need. Might be worthwhile to take in a digital picture, if you head into a computer store. As far as playing DVD's goes, I don't think there'd be any special setting, but you'll just need the right software, which is probably on your computer already.
