As far as external cables go, I'm not actually convinced there IS a difference. I suspect it's all just marketing.

I've got cables that, because of their age, I *know* are definitely from the 1.0-1.1 era, yet they work perfectly fine with 2.0 devices such as fast hard drives. I've pushed them as fast as the hard drives can handle, never had a problem.

I'm also convinced of this for two other reasons:

1 - I've never been able to find ANY reputable manufacturer's site (Belkin, Belden, Alpha, etc) that, once you get past the sales propaganda, mentions any specific technical difference such as number of twists per inch, shielding, etc.

2 - I gotta figure that if it REALLY mattered, the USB folks would have come up with a different connector for 2.0, like the way FireWire has a different connector for 400 and 800 speeds.

It wouldn't surprise me if someday scientists conclude that whole cause of global warming is the methane produced by all the bullsh*t that's spread around in the cabling industry. And don't even get me started on some of the flat-out LIES that are told regarding audio cables.
