Inspiron 8000, screen dead, OK on ext monitor

Typically there is a light(bulb) behind the lcd panel, separate from the panel itself. Sounds like the light needs replacing, or it *could* be as simple as needing to reseat all connections between the mobo, panel and-or backlight - sometimes over time corrosion can cause connection problems.

I replaced my i5000's lid due to badly cracked hinges ... removing the trim pieces, inverter-cable and panel, etc, was like working on an intricate puzzle requiring patience and the right tools (ie, tiny drivers). But anyway, since there are so many panel options you need to make sure you get the correct part for your config. Personally, I would only deal directly with the mfgr on such an item (however they might forward you to a 3rd party). Dell has the contact info and basic repair info online at support.dell.com .
