you're right, these are estimates. they are based on the only clue we had which was that the systems were approximately 4 years old. i bought my last ls in november 2000, five years ago. four years ago, in late 2001, i was buying the inspiron 4000. and if you know the inspiron 4000 then you know that it is very particular about compatible memory. crucial sells compatible 256mb modules for this machine for $76 plus shipping... and least we forget that unless he plans on stealing software he is looking at another $100 for windows... but all of this is speculation. i agree with your general point about it possibly being worthwhile, and your specific point that it is not a good idea as a primary machine. but i feel it is the sort of thing that seems like a deal but unless you really know what you are doing can quickly become an expensive mistake. besides, with the $399 ($450) inspiron 2200 deal back on why get involved with this?
