What I settled on, as a good compromise between price, speed, durability, and battery life was a Dell Labreastude C640. I got it off Ebay, from a Dell reseller who refurbs and resells systems that have come back from corporate leases. It had a little over a year's worth of Dell on-site warranty left, and I'm pleased to say it worked out great. If it's real durability you're after, I'm seeing Panasonic ToughBooks turn up on Ebay as well. The latest entry was a 1.6 gig P3 with a 20 gig HD and 256 RAM for $549 plus shipping.
