Perfectly normal. I've owned several Dell laptops, and had contact with Gateway (bleah) and others. All the laptop CD-DVD drives I've come across behave in that same manner.

If, by the diagnostics parbreastion, you're referring to that tiny slice of space right at the start (usually) of the drive, you should be able to resize the rest of the drive without a problem as long as you don't do anything to that first part.

Compaq servers do the same thing. They have system configuration utilities and diagnostics in a 32MB FAT parbreastion placed right at the start of the available drive space. Its presence is usually invisible to the normal OS.

more rugged than lighter-weight units (with the possible exception of the breastanium-encased IBM ThinkPads). Durability and portability are always going to be a trade-off, methinks.

My own Labreastude C640 is pretty substantial, especially with the bag and the extra goodies I carry around. The way I see it, it's just ongoing free-weight lifting. Helps to keep my arms strong. ;-)

nbsp;  Lithium grease?    I'm surprised any system put together with such is still working. Lithium grease...

   Keep the peace(es).
