Smith, Because the McAfee VirusScan program that Comcast is offering for free, checks for updates every 4 hours automatically, whether you need it or not, if you are connected to the internet. Which may interrupt any work in progress. This version does not appear to offer the user, to either schedule a time for this update to occur. Or allow the user to disable the feature, if he prefers to do it himself.

I personally use CA's EzAntivirus program. They release several update signature files, on any given weekday. They chose to change the name of the file each time. But the fact is many of the files are the same. So it would be inconvenient if my antivirus program automatically check for an update, and I had to stop everything, to download the update. Especially if it exactly the same as the one I downloaded hours before.

Dr. Joel M. Hoffman, You can try the following: b. Reboot PC, and see if McAfee loads properly without giving you an error message. If nothing happens, then you should be good. Wait for a little over 4 hours to see if it tries to update itself. d. If 1.b. produces an error messages, causing McAfee not to load properly, you will need to go back into MSCONFIG, and add a checkmark to the line for the Updater program. 2. If #1 doesn't work, and you still want to disable this automatic updating feature. The only thing I can see, after reading the manuals for the program, is to Update to McAfee VirusScan Home or Pro.

Maybe you could explain why you don't want the latest virus signatures, then maybe we'll understand what you want and can help you out.

Obviously, uninstalling the software will stop the popups, but that's probably not a good solution...
